🐾 A Whippet, Two Cats, and Quiet Comfort in Newport Pagnell, UK
When we first arrived in Milton Keynes, specifically the charming village of Newport Pagnell, we weren’t entirely sure what to expect. Known for its roundabouts and peaceful suburban life, it quickly became one of our favorite quiet stops on our European journey—all thanks to a trio of unforgettable pets: Bobbie, Bowie, and Wednesday.
Meet the Crew:
Bobbie, a graceful Whippet, stole our hearts the moment we stepped through the door. She’s elegant, sensitive, and oh-so-speedy when the zoomies hit. With her long limbs and soulful eyes, she was the perfect walking companion during our morning strolls along the River Ouzel trails.
Then there’s Bowie—a sleek, independent cat with rockstar energy and the perfect eyeliner to match. He played it cool at first, but by day two, he was weaving between our legs at dinner time like we’d known him for years.
And finally, Wednesday, the little shadow-cat. Mysterious but sweet, she has the kind of quiet presence that makes a house feel like home. She loved curling up on the window sill in the late afternoon sun and watching the world go by.
Daily Life in the Village
Newport Pagnell has a way of slowing time. We found ourselves settling into a rhythm we didn’t know we needed—long dog walks in the early morning mist, cozy evenings in with purring cats, and a quiet appreciation for life’s simplest joys.
We explored Willen Lake for a sunny afternoon picnic and spent a few workdays in coffee shops tucked into nearby Milton Keynes. But honestly? Some of our favorite moments were spent curled up with a book, Bobbie asleep at our feet, and the cats scattered across the couch like furry throw pillows.
Why This Sit Stood Out
As full-time travelers and pet sitters, every sit is different—but this one felt personal. Maybe it was the strong sense of home the pets gave us, or the warm welcome from their humans, or the peaceful rhythm of life in Newport Pagnell. Maybe it was all of it.
We left with happy memories, a camera roll full of sweet photos, and a newfound love for Whippets. Bobbie, Bowie, and Wednesday—we miss you already.
🛒 Living Well on Less: UK Groceries & Golden Fry Feasts
One of the biggest surprises during our sit in Newport Pagnell was just how affordable daily life was compared to back home in the U.S. We did a full week’s grocery shop—fresh produce, snacks, pantry staples, and plenty of pet supplies—and the total came to just £56.
Back in the States, that same haul easily would’ve cost us $150–200 USD, especially with current food inflation. It felt so freeing to eat well, cook at home, and still stay within budget. Plus, the local shops had everything we needed—no stress, no fuss, and no $7 oat milk.
And then… there was Golden Fry.
If you’re in the Milton Keynes area and craving that true British fish and chips experience, this is the spot. For just £26, we got two massive portions of battered fish, two sides of thick-cut chips, mushy peas, baked beans, and fizzy drinks. We’re not exaggerating when we say this meal could have fed a family of four (but we gave it our best effort). Crispy, golden, salty, satisfying—and served with zero pretension.
Eating well doesn’t have to mean breaking the bank. This sit reminded us that slow travel, home-cooked meals, and the occasional indulgent takeaway can make you feel rich in all the right ways.
